Of the many holistic pet foods I’ve used and reviewed, it’s hard to complete a list of ten. Remember that to be “holistic”, as per this blog, I’m not only looking for basic good nutrition but for supplements that promote health. As I find new foods that qualify, I’ll add them to this list.

Have you heard of balanced diet supreme V? Currently my dogs are on California Natural and I want to switch them to a better food. They are both labs and have allergies.

I haven’t heard of Balanced Diet Supreme V but it looks very interesting. Let me just point out that when dogs have allergies and it’s for sure not grain-related (because you are not feeding them grain-based foods), the foods most often recommended contain meat sources that are uncommon, such as lamb or venison. Balanced Diet is all the same meats that you would ordinarily get in a non-allergenic food (chicken, beef), so it would not qualify as an “anti-allergenic diet”.
California Natural Lamb & Rice *is* formulated for allergies. Are your dogs not doing okay on it?
Do your homework ! Ultra by Nutro is one of the best foods that you can buy. Many times a pet food company makes a pet food that reads well but doesn’t work well. Many problems like palatablity, gas, high stool volume can be contributed to ingredients that do not mesh will together. Ultra makes a product that your dog can actually use. A dog food company can not put on the ingredient label “human grade” it is against FDA regulations. Also the word organic can be misleading.

I was happy to see someone say Canidae! I have been feeding it for a few years now and it has exceeded my expectations! I never thought my German Sheppard could have such a soft, shiny coat! Canidae doesn’t do national advertising. This keeps the cost of the food affordable. It’s a super premium food without the super premium price! I like the fact that that all the meat they use is USDA inspected hormone and antibiotic free.
