Top Holistic Pet Foods You May Not Have Heard About

People sometimes will not try a particular holistic pet food simply because their vet has not heard of it. Truth be told, while the organic or holistic pet food market is admittedly small, it’s just not likely that your vet has heard about all the choices out there.

This is my growing list of Holistic Pet Foods. It was originally sourced from advertisements within Animal Wellness Magazine but is growing via my own research and user contributions. Let’s make this the most comprehensive list of healthy pet foods on the Internet! P.S. I have not reviewed or tried all of these foods so caveat emptor. They simply meet my initial criteria of human-grade meat, no by-products or artificial colors and flavors, no chemical preservatives, etc.

Some of these foods offer free samples, expect to pay modest shipping and handling, and some companies ship only to Canada OR only to U.S.

  1. Would you consider apple wood chews for chinchillas/rabbits to be a holistic food? This web site: http://www.predatorpee.com/chinchews.htm sells slices and sticks that are organic/all natural.

  2. Dr.Harvey’s should certainly be on your list unless you think everyone has heard of the company. They make Canine Health-The Miracle Dog Food and Veg to Bowl and many other wonderful products for dogs, cats and birds. They use only human consumption and organic ingredients. Dr.Harvey’s is a great authentic, healthy wonderful company. You should check it my dogs are certainly glad they I did! I thought they should be added to your list! Thanks!

  3. Lincoln,

Wow, thanks for telling me about this. See, as I said, it’s very hard to find all of the options! I think I should just create a comprehensive list of all holistic foods out there. Hmmm, I think I’ll just do that!

For my readers, I checked the link to Dr. Harvey’s. It looks like an excellent supplement that you add your own own meat source, so this is for people who want to mix up their own dog and cat foods and just be sure that it’s getting a good mix of nutrients.

  4. Kate,

Thanks for the link. My focus is really more on dogs and cats but wow, great reminder that those are not the only pets out there. Certainly if an animal is chewing on wood, you don’t want wood that is treated with pesticides and such. Good information.

  5. How about Natura pet food? http://www.naturapet.com Is it considered well known? Their pet food line includes Innova, a holistic food, Evo, a grain free food, and Karma, a certified organic food, among others. I can’t say enough good things about this food, specifically Innova. It is made of human grade ingredients including turkey, chicken, barley, rice, apples, carrots, and cottage cheese. It is expensive but you end up feeding much less and I believe you avoid some vet bills as well. We get all kinds of free samples from our distributor so any store should be able to provide you with some. Natura’s tag line is, “The Healthiest Pet Foods in the World” and I am convinced that statement is true.

  6. Eric,

Yes, indeed, of course we need to include Innova! I was starting just with the foods that advertised in Animal Wellness Magazine this month, but Innova is certainly well-known. I’ll try to find some stats and reviews but in the meantime will add the link.

    Bless you!

  7. Hi Teresa,
Solid Gold is an all natural dog food that is excellent.

  8. Thanks, Main Street. I like Solid Gold, it’s on this list and it’s also on my comparison chart. Good job! Teresa

  9. Great post! I know a few places where you can get all-natural hermit crab food online:
    The Crabbage Patch
    The Happy Hermit
    El’s Shells
    Colorado Care Company

(the first two stores carry my own line of foods called Crabotanicals; you can find out more about my products at http://hermitcrabfoodtrials.blogspot.com)

  10. We recently adopted another chihuahua and wanted to find better sources for healthy dog food. I am so glad I found your blog. Thank you for your diligent research and time you have spent to benefit all of us who want healthy pets.

  11. I wanted to add ask about the brand name AVODERM which says it is all natural. Do you recommend that one?

  12. Hi Teresa,
Holistic Heath Extension is an all natural dog food that is excellent I can’t say enough good things about this food

  13. I really need to give my chow a better supplement. What do you recommend? He’s on Cosequin, but I think he needs something more. I hear Nuvet alot, but I am not one to follow the herd and not sure if this is just hyped up do nothing dog vitamins. Any suggestions for a good daily supplement? to help with general health and aging joints? I am AVERSE to NSAIDs after reading horror stories.
