This is my growing list of Holistic Pet Foods. It was originally sourced from advertisements within Animal Wellness Magazine but is growing via my own research and user contributions.

Would you consider apple wood chews for chinchillas/rabbits to be a holistic food? This web site: http://www.predatorpee.com/chinchews.htm sells slices and sticks that are organic/all natural.
Dr.Harvey’s should certainly be on your list unless you think everyone has heard of the company. They make Canine Health-The Miracle Dog Food and Veg to Bowl and many other wonderful products for dogs,cats and birds. They use only human consumption and organic ingredients. Dr.Harvey’s is a great authentic, healthy wonderful company. You should check it my dogs are certainly glad they I did! I thought they should be added to your list! Thanks!

Wow, thanks for telling me about this. See, as I said, it’s very hard to find all of the options! I think I should just create a comprehensive list of all holistic foods out there. Hmmm, I think I’ll just do that!
For my readers, I checked the link to Dr. Harvey’s. It looks like an excellent supplement that you add your own own meat source, so this is for people who want to mix up their own dog and cat foods and just be sure that it’s getting a good mix of nutrients.

Thanks for the link. My focus is really more on dogs and cats but wow, great reminder that those are not the only pets out there. Certainly if an animal is chewing on wood, you don’t want wood that is treated with pesticides and such. Good information.

How about Natura pet food? http://www.naturapet.com Is it considered well known? Their pet food line includes Innova, a holistic food, Evo, a grain free food, and Karma, a certified organic food, among others. I can’t say enough good things about this food, specifically Innova. It is made of human grade ingredients including turkey, chicken, barley, rice, apples, carrots, and cottage cheese. It is expensive but you end up feeding much less and I believe you avoid some vet bills as well. We get all kinds of free samples from our distributor so any store should be able to provide you with some. Natura’s tag line is, “The Healthiest Pet Foods in the World” and I am convinced that statement is true.

Yes, indeed, of course we need to include Innova! I was starting just with the foods that advertised in Animal Wellness Magazine this month, but Innova is certainly well-known. I’ll try to find some stats and reviews but in the meantime will add the link.

Holistic Heath Extension is an all natural dog food that is excellent I can’t say enough good things about this food
I really need to give my chow a better supplement. What do you recommend? He’s on Cosequin, but I think he needs something more. I hear Nuvet alot, but I am not one to follow the herd and not sure if this is just hyped up do nothing dog vitamins. Any suggestions for a good daily supplement? to help with general health and aging joints? I am AVERSE to NSAIDs after reading horror stories.

Before we talk about supplements, what is age, his activity, and his basic diet like? Are you already feeding him a non-grain, non-preservatives, non-byproducts holistic food?
And what are you seeking to do with the supplements? Overcome joint and arthritic problems?
Can’t blame your NSAIDS-aversion. After this surgery, they are strictly forbidden! Turns out they interfere with the body’s natural healing! I’m making marvelous progress on fish oil as an anti-inflammatory and on a particular acai-based health drink.
Speaking of which, for your chow, what about fish oil in addition to the Cosequin? I think every human and every pet should be on fish oil!

For many pet owners, their dog is like one of the family. They love their dog deeply and want only the best for them. Maintaining your dog’s health ensures he will have a long and happy life with you, and a crucial part of this is feeding your dog the right food. Holistic dog food is one of the best choices you can make for your pet.
You have a pretty good list going, so far. I’m always happy to see people interested in the health of their pets. =) So, I just thought I’d let you know about two other pet food brands that are awesome. The first is “Timberwolf Organics” which is a little pricey, but my dog did exceptionally well on this food. Unfortunately I had to switch him since we moved and nobody around here sells it. They also make a cat food called “Serengeti”, which I never had an opportunity to try. The second brand is “Orijen”. It is a Canadian based company and is also pricey, but excellent. The only caution with this one, as with “Evo”, is that it may not be the best choice for a dog that is not extremely active, since it contains large amounts of protein, which can cause liver and kidney damage in your average house pet. But it is excellent for working dogs (ie herders) and pregnant or nursing bitches. Anyway, I hope that helps you out!
