Don’t shoot me — I don’t think a Nutro recall means Nutro products are bad

This week’s voluntary recall of certain lots of dry cat food by Nutro made a lot of people happy.  They used it to tout their own products.

Not me.  I’m not a Nutro fan, have never used it, it’s not my pet food of choice.  So perhaps it’s even more unusual for me to come out in their favor.

This was a precautionary recall only due to the wrong values of zinc and potassium in the pet food.  I’m not a vet, can’t say whether or not they would do harm.  No harm has been reported, according to the press release.

But honestly, passing news along like this is not a free pass to become self-serving.

I’m not perfect, my attitudes on building my own sideline pet food business and blogging have evolved over the last three years.  I’m sure I’ve erred.  I hope I’ve grown up a bit.

But folks, there are relatively few reasons to boycott companies and to ruin their good names.  Sending your friends to your own pet food company is certainly NOT a reason.

In this case, no pet illness has been reported.  Let’s not force Nutro or any other company down a path of dishonesty and hiding the facts because they are afraid of a massive consumer pull-out over a mistake.
